The diesel particulate filter was introduced to reduce soot emissions from diesel engines. It works by trapping particulates in a ceramic honeycomb structure and periodically burning them off through a process called active regeneration.
The problem: active regeneration requires sustained high exhaust temperatures — temperatures only achievable at highway speeds for extended periods. If your diesel primarily sees short urban trips, the DPF never gets the conditions it needs to regenerate.
The result is a DPF that progressively fills with soot until it triggers a warning light, enters limp mode, or eventually cracks from failed emergency regeneration attempts.
The VW GTD we worked on in May 2024 was a textbook case. The owner was using a diesel vehicle primarily for school runs and short urban errands — completely incompatible with DPF requirements.
The fix was straightforward once the diagnosis was correct: forced regeneration, EGR cleaning, and education. The owner now takes a 30-minute motorway drive weekly to allow passive regeneration. No problems since.
